Case Study: Municipal VoIP System in Westport, CT
Helping Westport Save $300,000 a Year with an Integrated VoIP Telephone System
The Client
Town of Westport, Connecticut and Westport Public Schools.
The Project
RCC worked with the Town of Westport and the Westport Public Schools to plan, design, procure and oversee installation of a VoIP telephone system that supports 1,300 users in 20 facilities. The project involved a conversion from Centrex to VoIP, with a payback period of less than three years. Annual operating savings is estimated at approximately $300,000, with a total 10-year lifecycle cost savings of nearly $2 million.
RCC's Role
RCC provided many important services for Westport during this project, including:
- Designed a system that includes redundant, geographically diverse Cisco Unified Communications Managers, Emergency Responder and Unity unified messaging integrated with Microsoft Exchange 2003 for the Town offices, and separately integrated with FirstClass email in the school facilities.
- Consolidated all municipal departments, public schools, public safety and public library on a single platform operating over Westport's private fiber optic network.
- Substantially upgraded the municipal enterprise network with gigabit Ethernet PoE switches and category 6 structured cabling system at key sites.
