Case Study: Raleigh and Wake County, NC Communications Center Upgrade

New Floorplan, Console Furniture, CAD, E9-1-1 and a Backup Center

 

The Client

The City of Raleigh and Wake County, North Carolina.

 

The Project

A 21-position dispatch center, located in a basement, handled 9-1-1 calls for the City of Raleigh and Wake County. The center dispatched the Raleigh Police Department and Fire/EMS, the County Sheriff’s Deputies and Volunteer Fire Departments. The S.O. Dispatchers occupied a separate room within the center. The client selected RCC to remodel and upgrade the center while maintaining 24x7 call-take and dispatch operations within the center.

 

RCC's Role

RCC provided many important services for the Communications Center upgrade project, including:

 

  • Developing specifications and floorplan layouts for new console furniture.

  • Developing specifications for dispatch chairs, static conducting carpet systems designed for raised computer flooring and acoustic sound absorption systems. 
  • Design and implementation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system with three 21” CAD monitors and a 17” radio CRT.
  • Upgrade of the 9-1-1 system to PC workstations, using 17” LCD panels, with automated TDD and other features.
  • Design of a backup center in a newly constructed Fire Station with 17 Call Take and Dispatch positions. Included the design of the call center and equipment room, including UPS and Generator specifications, raised floor systems and new dispatch console furniture. 
  • Assisted in implementing the radio, CAD and 9-1-1 hardware in the backup center.
  • Issued RFPs on behalf of the client and assisted in the procurement process.
